Cowboy boots have been around for centuries. Originally designed for equestrian life, these riding boots were imported from Spain to the Americas, dating back to the early 1500s. Classically cowboy boots had a heel with a pointed toe, and a tall shaft to hold the boot in place with the absence of laces. Originally the boots were made out of cowhide leather, but also they were made from other animal skins like alligator, snake, or even lizard. Decoration varied widely, but was always important in the making of the boots. Early boots that were custom designed were made with decorative stitching with cutouts on the high tops, often of Texas stars, as well as different designs using different materials. There are two types of cowboy boots, western and roper. Western style is distinguished by a tall boot shaft and an angled heel typically known as a “walking” heel. The new design is called the roper style. It is a shorter boot with a very low and squared off heel. The toes of the cowboy boots are usually more rounded and correlate more with a “street wear” style. Durango Boots have designed their cowboy boots in both the western and roper styles.
